RainX has been helping Canadian drivers achieve maximum visibility for years
No matter the driving you’re doing, visibility is a huge factor towards maximum safety. One of the key factors in good visibility, especially in winter, is having an effective wiper blade and washer-fluid combination.

Do your wipers squeak, chatter or miss parts of the windshield? Does your washer fluid smear or freeze, blocking your view, when you use it in the cold? If you answered ‘yes’ to either of the above, it’s time to upgrade.

RainX is a brand that’s been helping Canadian drivers see clearly out of their vehicles for years. Your correspondent fondly remembers applying RainX water repellant to the windows of the family van with my dad as a kid. Later, I’d have the chance to watch rain bead off of the glass like magic from inside.

Nowadays, many Canadian drivers know that the same water-repelling property is available in a wintertime windsheild washer ‘De-Icer’ fluid from RainX. It’s that bright yellow stuff that costs a buck or two more than the standard blue fluid at the department store or gas station. Folks who know about it (your writer included), will tell you it’s easily worth the extra money.

I don’t do product placements-- but I do buy RainX winter De-Icer fluid by the case for use during my extensive winter test-drives and travels. In fact, if you check out any of my wintertime video reviews, and you’ll probably see at least one jug of RainX in the trunk.

Unlike the cheap stuff, the yellow RainX fluid doesn’t freeze and smear when it’s cold outside, even at 30 below. At temperatures that see cheaper washer fluids icing over the windshield and blocking visibility, RainX only ‘freezes’ for a fraction of a second. In a pinch, you can even mix it with the cheap stuff to improve its effectiveness.

Rain X also leaves a water-repelling layer behind. This makes it easier to keep the windshield clean-- and therefore easier to see out of at all times.

I asked Rachel Agnew, the Car Care Brand Manager at Shell Lubricants, what goes into Rain X to make it different.

“Rain-X De-Icer windshield washer fluid is infused with water repelling technology that seals the microscopic pores of glass with a super-slick, invisible barrier that repels rain, sleet and snow on contact” she explained. “It resists freezing and streaking when it’s very cold, thanks to the -40°C rated anti-freeze built into the formula”.
