The official range figures are in from the EPA for the upcoming Kia EV6 all-electric crossover. When the model debuts next year, the top performer in the lineup in terms of distance on a charge will be the RWD Long Range variant, delivering 499 km – just about where company representatives had said they hoped range would land when the model was unveiled this summer.
There’s a long drop from that to the range offered by the most-affordable base variant, however. The entry-level EV6 EX will deliver 373 km of range. The AWD Long Range model comes in at 441 km, according to EPA testing. Which, by the way, places it ahead of fellow Hyundai Group EV, the Ioniq 5 (412 km). Kia explains the difference comes from its model’s more-aerodynamic shape compared the Hyundai crossover.
Not included in the EPA’s figures is range for the limited-run First Edition version of the EV6, but know that that model is a Long Range version with all-wheel drive; let’s assume then that it will offer a range of close to 440 km.
Recall that initially, Kia is offering the EV6 with one battery size in Canada, a 77.4-kWh system (a smaller 58-kWh version will be offered later, presumably as a more-affordable option). Output will be 167 hp from the base model with RWD, with the Long Range variant good for 218 hp. The Long Range EV6 with all-wheel drive delivers 313 hp, meanwhile. Above all of them will sit the EV6 GT, good for 576 hp, but chances are that version will hit the market later (and there are no EPA range figures for that version yet).
The EV6 can be charged at fast DC charging stations (up to 350 kW), which means it can recover 120 km of range in 5 minutes and go from 10 to 80 percent charge in 18 minutes, according to the automaker.
