In a time when many manufacturers are studying various options to market their vehicles with the new technologies available, Chinese automaker Geely has just set the cat among the pigeons, announcing that it will produce vehicles to be sold solely via the Taobao web site.

Starting on December 22, 2010, Geely will be offering the Gleagle Panda online only, with other models to be progressively added to the list. Aimed at reducing distribution costs, the new system will allow consumers to make a $ 43 deposit on their chosen vehicle before visiting the dealership and finalizing the purchase.

The sheer size of the Chinese territory, which presumably forces Geely to operate a vast network of dealerships to reach Chinese motorists in a classic sales model, has probably played a key role in this decision. China is also the country with the most Internet users in the world.
