Every May, Canada receives thousands of Tulips from the Dutch as a recurring gift that dates back to the mid 1900's. This May, alongside the tulips, another renowned Dutch export will land on our soil, too. Spyker, the Dutch coachbuilder-gone-supercar manufacturer, is readying to launch their wares onto Canadian streets.

Spyker C8 Spyder

Originally started by the Spijker brothers in 1875, Spyker's road cars were powerful record-setters from the get-go. Though the original Spyker brand stopped trading in 1925, officials at the new company say that the resurrected name still stands for technologically advanced, exotic and dependable cars.

Fast forward to 2009, and the Spyker brand has recently appointed the Dilawri Group of Companies in Calgary as its first exclusive dealer in Canada. The Dilawri Group encompasses 28 other dealerships in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and most recently, Vancouver.

Tony Dilawri, of the Dilawri group, will feature the brand at the 2009 Calgary International Auto & Truck Show through to March 15th, displaying the C8 in both 'Spyder' and 'Laviolette' form. That's Spyker-speak for convertible and coupe, by the way.

The high-performance C8 lineup boasts a potent Audi V8 with 400 horsepower, lightweight aluminum construction and styling that's sure to cause a reaction wherever it rolls up. A visual assortment of scoops, vents, and metallic accents, the C8 rips through 0-60 in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of around 300 km/h.

Both of these members of the Spyker C8 family are mid-engined two-seaters, and weigh in at around 2,800 pounds for a very favorable power to weight ratio. Output is handled by a six-speed manual gearbox, limited slip differential and antilock braking system. The C8 is available in right-side or left-side drive as well.

Spyker shoppers can look for optional features like a turned aluminum dashboard fascia, special 19-inch Aeroblade wheels, quilted leather throughout the cabin and a set of Chronoswiss instruments. Spyker says that complete bespoke and unique finishes are available for the experienced connoisseur, too. For travelers, there's even Louis Vuitton luggage available exclusively for the car. Spyker is the only automotive manufacturer to benefit from a custom luggage set from the famous French designer.
