An Embarrassment of Riches

After assessing and ranking the top choices in the trendy subcompact SUV segment for Canadian consumers in 2018, we now turn our attention to a category that’s every bit as hot. The compact SUV segment includes sharp new entrants as well as big names that have been around for over 20 years.

Choice is certainly not lacking; the segment contains at least a dozen models worth serious consideration, and at least six that really stand out. The others are worthy alternatives, but with competition so fierce and with so many attractive models to choose from, it’s easy for a perfectly suitable SUV to be left behind.

As we did with our Top 10 list of subcompact SUVs in Canada in 2018, we give you a worst-to-first ranking, totally scientific and at the same time completely unscientific!

10 (tied) — Volkswagen Tiguan

Impossible or just about to do a Top 10 and not include the popular Tiguan. Truth is, the new edition, introduced last year, offers nowhere near the same level of refinement and driving pleasure that its predecessor did. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind that this new generation was conceived mainly with the American market in mind. Which means it’s more spacious and comfortable. But if you’re looking for pleasurable driving experience, forget about it. And yet, sales for the model are up, so it must be resonating with consumers in some way.

Here are specifications for the 2018 Tiguan, our review of  the model, a photo gallery and even 10 reasons for buying a 2018 Tiguan!
