This, in contrast with the Defender 80, is no way, no how a rumour – in fact it’s at the production phase and just about to launch on the market. This adventure-focused SUV is so imminent, in fact, that we're driving the vehicle this week! We will share our driving impressions with you in the coming days.

With this new SUV, Mazda intends to knock on the doors of adventurous weekend warrior types. This is a growing segment in the industry and the Japanese manufacturer didn’t see why it should let competing brands reap the spoils of the popularity. And so the city slicker CX-5 compact SUV now gets a more rough-and-tumble sibling.

The CX-50 is based on the same architecture as the Mazda3 and the CX-30, but with a special focus on off-road driving. Of course, we're not talking about an authentic 4x4 like the Jeep Wrangler or the Ford Bronco, but still, it's a safe bet that the CX-50 will be the most rugged vehicle in Mazda's lineup once it arrives at dealers this spring.
