Canadians on a budget love winter but they love affordable AWD vehicles even more

Not only does the AWD version of one of the world’s favourite compact sedans come in at just over 30 grand, but it also comes as a fuel-stingy hybrid as standard. In fact, if you want an AWD Corolla, you need to go hybrid, making it the only hybrid on this list.

Combined power for the hybrid system comes in at 134 hp and 156 lb-ft, which aren’t massive figures but when you consider that you’re sipping fuel at the rate of a combined 4.9L/100 km, the power doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

5th place: Subaru Impreza Convenience -- $29,305

Strange fact: this is the top-ranked compact hatchback on our 2024 list of affordable AWD models. From here on in it’s all crossovers. Not sure why that is but there you have it.

That said, the Impreza is so spacious inside that you might mistake it for a crossover. And it’s cheaper than its actual crossover sibling, the Crosstrek, which we saw earlier.

The Impreza no longer exists as a sedan, by the by, and comes only as a hatch, equipped with AWD as standard as well as a 2.0L flat 4-cylinder good for 152 hp and 145 lb-ft, sent to the wheels via a CVT.
