Volkswagen helped kick off the 2015 Los Angeles Auto show media days with the North American premiere of the Golf GTE Sport concept. This plug-in hybrid first appeared at the Wörthersee festival back in May.

Using a 295-horsepower, 1.6L 4-cylinder TSI engine from the Volkswagen Polo R WRC, the Golf GTE Sport adds two electric motors (one in front and another in the rear) for a total output of 395 horsepower along with 494 lb-ft of torque. It can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 280 km/h. The available range in EV mode is estimated at 50 kilometres.

Outside, the two gullwing doors swing forward, and the upper part of each one extends into the roof and is entirely made of dark exposed carbon fibre. In fact, a large portion of the body is made of carbon fibre, which contributes to the car’s outstanding performance. LED headlights, 20” wheels, a large rear diffuser, and round stainless-steel twin tailpipes complete the looks.

Volkswagen also has 2016 Beetle Dune and Beetle Denim on display. Don’t miss our coverage of the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show!
