Volkswagen will surprise Frankfurt Motor Show visitors by unveiling a one-seat experimental electric car as a showcase for its future zero-emission technology.

While some might think that it's a smaller version of the XL1 concept, VW Executive Director of Group Research Juergen Leohold hinted at something ''even better''.

That’s saying a lot since the XL1’s average consumption is an extraordinary 0.9 L/100 km, courtesy of an impressive 0.186 drag coefficient, two-cylinder TDI engine, advanced electric motor and ultra-lightweight unibody construction.

Leohold didn't provide any more details, leaving fans and journalists guessing instead. Could this be an EV version of the Up! or Golf, two models set for release in the US by 2013?
