Volkswagen introduced a new concept version of the BlueMotion design this week. Integrated into the new 2009 version of the European Golf, this design promises to set new standards in diesel fuel economy.
The Concept is powered by a highly-efficient, 1.6-litre TDI common rail diesel engine producing a respectable 105 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. At 99 g/km, its CO2 emissions are among the lowest in the industry.
Not only does it offer considerable environmental advantages, it also kicks out a decent performance on the road. It makes the 0-100-km/h dash in 11.3 seconds and achieves a top speed of 188 km/h. In order to improve the vehicle's aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, low rolling resistance tires are part of the standard package, as well as a set of aerodynamic body elements. The transmission's gears have also been adjusted to minimize high engine speeds. Everything has been designed with fuel economy in mind.
Like the other BlueMotion vehicles, a particle filter has been fitted onto the Golf. The new generation of Golfs will be available in January 2009 in Britain, while the BlueMotion version will be launched mid-year. We can only hope that the BlueMotion model will make its way onto the Canadian market by 2010.
