When Suzuki decided to launch a larger sport utility vehicle than the Grand Vitara, it had to outsource platforms and components, which led to a unique partnership with General Motors. And so, the XL7 is based on the previous-generation Chevrolet Equinox.

The XL7 is a comfortable and versatile commuter that can overcome a variety of obstacles in the urban jungle.

However, Suzuki quickly realized that the plan did not exactly work as expected. The vehicle does have some interesting attributes and qualities but not enough to become a buyer magnet, hence the sub-par sales. The worst part is that no long-term agreement was signed with GM, thereby sealing the fate of the XL7 as it likely won’t benefit from the much more advanced architecture of the rejuvenated Equinox.

That being said, despite a one-year hiatus in 2008, the Suzuki XL7 does not come only with flaws. Au contraire!

Somewhat distinctive
While the overall design of the XL7 evokes just about every other midsize SUV on the market, it still boasts a couple of unique styling cues. Whether you like them or not, the diamond-shaped headlights are quite distinctive, making the model unmistakable from a distance.

The silhouette does not particularly stand out, with soft angles commonly found on SUVs. However, the side glass stretches backward to create a smooth, half-oval shape that further defines the XL7.

Inside, this Suzuki has nothing to be shy about, except for the disappointing fit and finish in a couple of spots. The combination of colors and materials makes the layout rather pleasant to the eye albeit understatedly sober.

Capable and proud
The 2009 Suzuki XL7 has undeniable capabilities. The 252-horsepower V6 under the hood is fairly responsive and easily thrusts the big rig, although it could do without the excessive noise under hard acceleration.
