In Canada, more specifically Quebec, subcompact cars represent by far one of the most popular market segments. People love their manoeuvrability, European-inspired styling and, obviously, their exceptional fuel economy. In fact, all these criteria are important for small car buyers, who generally prefer function over form.

Pricing, size and popularity is similar for all three.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have both. So, Auto123.com decided to pit three of the best-selling subcompacts in Canada against each other. They’re all hatchbacks, including the Honda Fit Sport, Toyota Yaris LE and Nissan Versa 1.8 SL, and they’ve all been put to the test by three of our seasoned writers, namely Bertrand Godin, Mathieu St-Pierre and Marc Bouchard.

A predetermined route crisscrossing Montreal’s North Shore served as a proving ground. For each model, the journalists had to fill a comprehensive evaluation sheet covering a variety of aspects, from performance to utility and safety.

The initial selection of models for this comparison was based on pure logic: these three Japanese hatchbacks have developed a fierce rivalry in the Canadian subcompact car segment. Pricing, size and popularity is similar for all three. The only thing left was to assess their performance and capabilities on the road.

The team put together a ranking and picked the overall winner after calculating their scores in the different categories (see the charts). Feel free to make your own assessment and crown your personal favorite!
