A well-maintained last-generation Regal should prove affordable, comfortable and entertaining
Ultimately, a well-maintained, properly-running 3800 V6 should prove largely worry free for years to come. One that’s been neglected and abused could cough up a rod at any moment.

The gist?
Spend the time to ensure you’re getting a model that’s been well maintained. Look for service records, and have a mechanic go over the car for their opinion.

Be sure to have the vehicle’s brakes and suspension checked over, too. Note that any popping or clunking sounds, especially from the front or rear of the vehicle, typically indicate that a suspension component or two is in need of replacement. Check the tires for remaining tread life too. If visiting a mechanic’s shop, ask them to inspect for coolant, oil or transmission fluid leaks beneath the car, too.

On a test-drive, be sure to double check for proper operation of the vehicle’s remote keyfobs, the stereo system, all displays, the instrument cluster and the climate control system. Ensure the air conditioner works properly, too. Check all power windows as well, since many owners have reported power window failure as the Regal ages.

Strange electrical problems, including intermittent functionality of interior and exterior lights, engine stalling and security alarm issues could be related to a faulty ignition cylinder. This is the mechanism into which drivers insert their key to start the engine. Many owners have reported strange and random issues that disappeared upon installation of a new ignition cylinder.

Other major or worrisome issues seemed fairly few and far between in the course of your correspondent’s usual research. Note that shoppers unfamiliar with tuning of the Regal’s powertrain are advised to avoid Regal GS models with modified engines-- particularly those with altered supercharger pulleys.

In the used market, many supercharged GM models eventually wind up with this modification, which effectively spins the supercharger even more quickly to create more boost. Though this modification can be made safely to some degree, it may adversely affect long-term reliability and longevity of the supercharger and engine. Aftermarket intake and exhaust systems tend to be safe-- so long as the quality of the parts and installation are sound.

Ultimately, a healthy and well-maintained used Regal should prove to be an affordable and easy-to-maintain sedan that packs plenty of comfort and satisfying power. With the available supercharged engine, it’s got an undeniable connection with the modern-day hot-rod enthusiast, too. Pricing in the used market starts from about $2,000.
