Mazda6 owners love the sporty side of their rides. They're a nice used-car buy, too.
Owners of four-cylinder models appreciate the gas mileage but wish for more low-end torque, while most owners of V6-powered 6’s love the performance and don’t find the mileage penalty to be enormous. Of course, owners of the 6 wagon love the lifestyle appeal of their machines, too—especially when it comes to family trips or outdoor sports.

Complaints tend to see fingers pointed at the 6’s slightly compact interior, particularly in the rear-seating department. Finally, a few owners mention a larger-than-expected turning circle which can impede parking attempts.

On a test drive, it’ll be important to inspect the condition of all four tires. Given the sporty nature of the 6 and its large wheels, replacement rubber isn’t going to be the most affordable going. Be sure the former owner isn’t trying to pass off a tire replacement on you.

Pay close attention to the operation of the automatic transmission if you’re used 6 candidate is equipped with one. Any shuddering, hard shifts, slipping or questionable sensations need to be addressed and identified. Though results are somewhat inconclusive, there have been reports of automatic transmission issues in the Mazda 6 that may be evidenced by any of the above.

Be extra careful if the model in question has the six-speed automatic (2005 and later). Using the wrong sort of fluid during a fluid and filter change can actually ruin the transmission. Ask if, and where, the fluid was most recently changed-- if at all.

Pay attention to the brakes too, and note any grinding, squealing or shuddering when they’re applied. Like the tires, brakes are wear items that are often used hard in a sporty car, so you’ll want to be sure they’re not due for immediate replacement.

Finally, note any clunking or popping noises coming from the front end. This could indicate a suspension component that’s in need of replacement.
