Annie Lafrenière lost her hair last year, albeit voluntarily, in support to Leucan children in their fight against cancer. The experience inspired her to take up a whole new challenge — to serve as the honorary president of the 2010 Leucan Shaved Head ChallengeTM for the Greater Montreal-Laval area.

She won’t be shaving her head again. Rather, she hopes to make a bigger statement by motivating hundreds, if not thousands of other people to shed their hair. The operation is well underway with numerous appearances at Leucan events and her contagious enthusiasm in our very own Auto123.com offices.

"Like anyone else, I’ve met a fair share of folks, from kids to seniors, suffering from various diseases throughout the years," she says. "My personal head-shaving experience in 2009 gave me a different perspective on life. I realized the significance of my action for these people and the support they could enjoy as a result. Therefore, I decided to become a more active and visible ambassador than with just my bald head."

Annie certainly doesn’t lack spirit and leadership. Last year, along with a few colleagues, she helped Auto123.com rise to the challenge. A total of 10 people agreed to lose their hair and raised over $7,000 in the process.

"This was more than what we had ever expected," she confesses. "I first thought we would be just two or three, but we wound up being 10 and the entire company supported us during the whole Shaved Head Challenge. Over the upcoming weeks, I want to build on this success and maximize our involvement, not only here but also in the entire community."

Of course, she knows it will be difficult to duplicate last year’s effort with the same circle of employees.

"We now have four volunteers for the challenge on May 14, which is a nice surprise. At $3,500, our fund-raising target may be lower this year, but we’re already nearing $2,000," adds Mrs. Lafrenière.
