Bad press has inflicted some damage on the fortunes of diesel-engine vehicles ever since Volkswagen and other companies were found to be rigging their engines in order to skew emissions-tests results and meet government-imposed standards.

The fallout from the scandal has led many consumers to return to gasoline-engine vehicles or take the leap into electric and hybrid technologies. But far from disappearing from sight, diesel remains for many an interesting choice, not least because it remains as fuel-stingy an alternative as ever and because its engines offer superior torque. What’s more, the gap in pricing at the pump between gasoline and diesel has shrunk considerably in the last couple of years.

If you’re tempted by the allures of the diesel engine, check out our overview of 2017-2018 models currently available to Canadian buyers. Take note that for some models fuel consumption figures are not available.
