After introducing a very nearly production-ready prototype version of its reborn new Insight in Detroit in January, Honda this week released images of the 2019 Honda Insight. The hybrid will get its official premiere this week at the New York and Vancouver International Auto Shows.
The first Insight saw the light of day back in 1999, but never found the same level of success as Toyota’s Prius; a second re-tool in 2009 failed to stick as well. The third attempt at making the Insight fly will see the new hybrid join the Clarity and the Accord hybrid as new electrified components added to Honda’s vehicle lineup in the past year.
Honda engineers installed a 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine combined with a generator motor and an electric propulsion motor. The first is connected to the second, and together they create electricity that runs the third, as well as feeding the lithium-ion battery pack.
Honda is positioning the next-generation Insight as a premium hybrid sedan (priced between the Civic and the Accord) fit for five passengers, and able to deliver 151 hp and 197 lb-ft of torque with the aforementioned setup. It is built on the same platform as the tenth-generation Civic.
Design highlights of the 2019 edition include a more streamlined silhouette, full LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights as well 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and an exclusive lightweight aluminum hood. As well, Honda has installed new sound insulation elements around the engine and the front fender to reduce cabin noise. In electric mode, this should make for an exceedingly silent ride.
