Corporation (MMC) created a new research vehicle: the Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV). Actually, it's an evolution from the EV electric car that's being used in research programs jointly conducted with electricity production companies.

This new vehicle is based on the miniature model, the i MiEV. However, the internal combustion engine of the original car is replaced by a light and compact in-wheel electric motor; it is mounted in front of the rear axle and powered by high-density lithium-ion batteries. MMC is starting the research in collaboration with the Tokyo Electric Power Company and Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. Other electricity companies will take part in the program beginning next year.

Why put everything at the back?

There are two main benefits. First, this layout makes for a more spacious interior; the MiEV can seat four passengers. The other benefit is more space available for batteries. Their range, for most people, is enough for one day's worth of driving. The car's performance is better than the base model in many categories: higher torque, less noise and less vibrations.

Finally, we should point out that MMC is currently working on the development of other advanced technologies, such as a clean diesel engine and a biofuel compatible engine.
