Most tuners and gearheads that purchase new cars choose to wait for the end of the manufacturer's warranty before going ahead with plans to modify their cars to their personal tastes. SEMA President Chris Kersting would like to see this change. This is why the SEMA Warranty Assurance Initiative is being introduced at this year's show.

Mr. Kersting wants to change the notion that adding aftermarket equipment to car automatically voids the original warranty. By offering a 36 month / 36 000 mile coverage designed to fill the gap between the warranties, Mr. Kersting hopes to put both dealers and consumers minds at ease. This program will only cover products from 50 manufacturers and will extend only to accessories sold and installed by selected dealerships in Southern California. The idea is to eventually include independent aftermarket retailers.

Most dealers recognize the importance of the car tuning market. They also realise that as the cars they sell become more sophisticated and require less maintenance, they will need to make up for that potential loss of revenue. Because drivers annually spend over $ 31 billion on speciality items, dealers would do well to endorse this warranty so that they may get their share of the revenue.
