It is now all but certain that Cadillac will actually build a production version of the Evoq 2-seat roadster and it is almost as certain that it and all the other brands from GM's luxury division will get new names.

Well-placed sources inside General Motors report that Cadillac is expected to drop such famous monikers as Seville and DeVille in favor of various combinations of letters. This is supposed to begin with the widely revised version of the Escalade sport-utility when it arrives this fall. The sources report that the new luxury sport-utility will carry the XT label and lose the Escalade name.

In a year or so, when the totally revamped Catera appears, it will be known simply as the Cadillac CTS.

Cadillac already has such designations for some of its vehicles, of course, including the Seville STS and the DeVille DHS, but now the names are supposed to disappear.

This change would match the naming policy of the makes that Cadillac wants to challenge on the world market -- Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The general trick is to get people to say they own a Cadillac rather than a Seville or a Catera, or whatever the way people say they own a BMW or a Mercedes.

As for the Evoq (or whatever it will be called) GM's officials still officially say "a business case has to be made for it," but unofficially it is well on its way to production status.
