After finishing a category, journalists can vote in any other category provided that they evaluate every model on the same day. For control purposes, a sophisticated bar-code/wireless scanner system is used to not only identify each vehicle, but also to determine the length of each test. If a journalist does not test-drive a car for at least 30 minutes, he or she won't be able to cast a vote.

The 2008 nominees
Obviously, I won't list the 59 models that were evaluated during the latest TestFest. What you should know is that the 12 categories represented the entire Canadian market, from Small Cars (under $25,000) to Prestige Cars (over $75,000). Among the latter was Audi's spectacular R8 supercar -- probably the most popular model during the event.

A huge number of sport utility vehicles (over 25) of various shapes and sizes were divided into three different categories. Pickup trucks and minivans also had their respective categories.

An independent accounting firm is in charge of tabulating the ballots and handicapping the results based on prices. The winners will be crowned on December 4 at special press conferences. Journalists will then be asked to evaluate the 12 finalists for the 2008 CCOTY Award and 2008 Canadian Truck of the Year Award.

A 13th category was added a couple of years ago to reward the Best New Technology. In this case, however, only a select group of journalists with a solid technical expertise have the right to vote.
