On June 3, General Motors announced the closing of four truck and SUV assembly plants. One of them is the Oshawa facility, in Ontario. Workers have learned that their services will no longer be required by the third quarter of 2009.
When informed of this sad news, the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) decided to protest against the decision through various actions, like holding a blockade in front of the plant, which delayed part of the production. The CAW is mainly asking the automaker to maintain at least one shift.
GM and CAW officials are still negotiating and working together to seek additional car production in Oshawa. GM leaves the door open for a new model to be produced there, although no announcement is expected anytime soon.
