Next year, General Motors will be the biggest seller of vehicles equipped with direct injection in North America. The technology was initially borrowed from the realm of diesel engines, and is proving its ability to save fuel and reduce emissions. BMW, Volkswagen / Audi and Mazda also use the technology in some of their vehicles.

We first introduced direct injection in North America in the 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line and the Pontiac Solstice GXP.

With direct injection, fuel is more precisely measured and controlled during the injection process- which itself occurs within the combustion chamber at very high pressures. The end result is more thorough combustion and reduced fuel consumption.

"We first introduced direct injection in North America in the 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line and the Pontiac Solstice GXP," said Tom Stephens, executive VP of Global Powertrain and Global Quality at GM. "We've been rolling out the technology across our portfolio as quickly as we can so that our customers will have additional fuel savings options. Direct injection is a state-of-the art engineering solution because it enables improved fuel economy and lower emissions without sacrificing power."

Direct injection will be available in more models than ever next year, including the 2010 Cadillac SRX and the 2010 Buick LaCrosse sedan, which we Canadians know as the Allure.

Additionally, both four and six-cylinder variants of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox will use direct injection technology under the hood. The 2010 Equinox engine lineup consists of a 2.4 litre four cylinder or a three-litre V6. Output is estimated at 180 or 255 horsepower, respectively.

The automaker's direct injection system is easily paired up with other fuel-saving technologies like variable valve timing, turbocharging and six-speed transmissions- depending on the application. According to GM, their 2009 domestic car and light truck lineups will use 700 million fewer gallons of fuel than the 2008 lineup during the life of the vehicles.
