Mazda3 Begins Production

Remember the Mazda MX Sportif concept that debuted in Geneva and found its way over to the New York Auto Show in April? It took the Big Apple by storm, being one of the most talked about prototypes of the show.

As expected it will replace the current Protegé early next year as a 2005 model and be dubbed the Mazda3, following the brand's new designation pattern started this year by the Mazda6 sedan. Japanese models will be called Axela, reportedly derived by combining the words "accelerate" and "excellent."

The European bound 5-door hatchback version of the new Mazda3 began production last week at its Hofu, Japan, assembly plant, preparatory to debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will also arrive at European dealers at that time.

The new Mazda3 is larger than the current Protegé inside, and will most likely offer a performance upgrade. While sedan, hatchback and 5-door wagon models will be produced globally, there is no word as to exactly which models will be coming to North America. Also, no prices have been determined.
