There are plans to launch a faster, sportier Range Rover Evoque in the not-so-distant future, at least according to Gerry McGovern, design director at Land Rover.

Executives of the British 4x4 manufacturer have hinted at a performance version of the Evoque in the past and it looks like they will make it a reality, especially now that Audi has revealed the almighty RS Q3 Concept in early response to a potential Evoque Sport.

''Eighty percent of Evoque buyers are completely new to the Land Rover brand,'' which McGovern says allowed them to push the boundaries and broaden the company's appeal.

The Evoque Sport would get an aggressive body kit, larger wheels, and a sport-tuned suspension that would drop the ride height by 10 millimetres.

What about the engine? Land Rover prefers to stay mum, but a high-performance version of the existing 240-hp 2.0L 4-cylinder makes sense. And since diesel is growing in popularity, we could see (well, at least in Europe) a 2.2L SD4 engine producing up to 210 horsepower and propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds.

Obviously, pricing is even more a mystery at this point. Look for the Range Rover Sport to made its debut late next year at the earliest.
