By 2025, EVs on the market will be counted not in the dozens but in the hundreds

Rivian R1S

We were first introduced to the Rivian company at the last Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2018. Since then the EV startup has continued to make headlines on a regular basis. Amazon and Ford have each made big investments in the firm.

For the moment, there are two all-electric models confirmed to be in development: the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV. The latter model, it is promised, will have a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of some 3 seconds, and range is expected to be very high.

It’s all very promising and impressive-sounding, but some caution is in order. We’re still a ways away from seeing a fully functional, in-the-flesh Rivian product, and it’s only when people start getting in one and can evaluate the product that we’ll know if the hype is justified.
