German auto giant Volkswagen is, surprisingly, another automaker that has been left struggling up the track in the race to produce small crossovers for the growing numbers of consumers that have forsaken cars for the segment.

Until this summer, Volkswagen has been content to offer the North American market only larger SUVs. But now, finally, there’s the Taos. The only German representative on this list has two things going for it: a very “European” driving experience and a lot of interior space for such a “small” vehicle.
