Ford has held its No. 2 spot for 70 years, which is ironically longer than "upstart" Toyota has been in existence.

Ford's brass are not showing signs of concern, stating that the company has "deliberately chosen to maximize profits instead of sales," according to a Reuters report.

"I'm not going to lose sleep over it," commented Ford Chief Operating Officer Nick Scheele, adding "I would wish we had the same opportunity in their home market that they have in ours. We were the market leader in Japan until we were kicked out in the early '30s."

Regarding this comment, Japan had less than 150,000 vehicles on the road in the first quarter of the previous century, the majority of which were Fords. In 1935 alone, Ford assembled 15,000 vehicles in the land of the rising sun, but the company, along with many other foreign firms, was taken over and its executives ousted when the WWII military government allied with Germany.
