Mitsubishi e-Evolution
First unveiled at the Tokyo auto show in 2017, the e-Evolution makes its North American debut at Los Angeles this week – plus, it will be at the Montreal show next January. While the manufacturer brought a concept version to the show, it did confirm that it plans to have a production version ready for 2021.
The e-Evolution prototype uses two high-torque, high-performance electric motors fed by a high-capacity battery pack. To help ensure exceptional on-road performances, the three-motor four-wheel-drive system uses a single motor to power the front wheels, supported by a new dual-motor active stability control system that connects two rear motors using an AYC electronic vector control unit. The system is very similar to what Mitsubishi has used in rally racing.
The model gets higher ground clearance, short overhangs, strong shoulders and narrow hips for greater nimbleness and agility. Meanwhile the big tires that stick out from the four corners of the chassis send an image of strength. Its designers see the vehicle as a cross between a sports car and a small utility model, but one that avoids compromises.
