Introducing the most powerful SLK ever, the SLK55 AMG

|
In 2001, Mercedes-Benz presented the world with the very first AMG-built SLK Class, the SLK32 AMG. Featuring a supercharged V6 pumping out 349 hp and 332 lb-ft torque, it was the most potent car in its class. Two generations and 10 years later, Mercedes-Benz is back with the most potent SLK ever built, the SLK55 AMG.

To create this ultimate version, AMG included an all-new engine, a 5.5-litre V8 generating 415 hp and 398 lb-ft. The mill isn't in fact completely original, as it's already powering the E63 AMG, CLS63 AMG, S63 AMG and CL63 AMG in twin-turbo guise.

Mercedes-Benz took the opportunity to introduce a cylinder deactivation technology as well. To use it, you simply select the transmission's C mode, for Controlled Efficiency, and the system does its thing between 800 and 3,600 rpm. The C mode also includes a start/stop function. The technology is rapped up in a seven-speed transmission that burns a meagre 8.4 litres per 100 km.

The SLK55 AMG will make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt show and should hit North American dealerships in early 2012.
