Mercedes-Benz CLS
Probably one of the most beautiful cars on the market, the CLS takes the coupe philosophy and stretches it out almost to the breaking point. But its profile is simply enchanting, its engine (at least, the punchier version) is powerful and flexible, and Mercedes’s boldness in offering such a distinct looking vehicle deserves mention.
I have to say it: the CLS takes all the characteristic Mercedes-Benz features and pushes them nearly to their limit. So its ergonomics aren’t perfect and its cabin is a little too sober. The CLS exudes class and sophistication tinged with a little rebellion. Call it the rebel with the golden touch.
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
True, the Corvette ZR1 launched last year is indeed more powerful. But nothing compares to the Z06 when it comes to acceleration, and the feeling of virtually blasting off when you hit the gas. My first contact with it was on a closed course, thankfully.
My predecessor had selected all the sport modes and in so doing deactivated the electronic control systems. I locked the steering wheel and jammed down on the gas, and I sent my Corvette spinning on itself. Once I’d righted the car, an obligatory jaunt on the track introduced me to absolutely stunning feats of acceleration. The finish could obviously be better, and the car can be temperamental in corners, but a Corvette is still a Corvette.
Land Rover Sport Supercharged
On the Moab trails of Utah, this big SUV effortlessly tackles boulders and sandy terrain. And once you leave the trails behind it easily and powerfully deals with the road ahead. Finally, its style and design make it the premier choice of transportation even for glamorous gala events.
True, reliability and quality finish aren’t always on the menu (one of my colleagues took an impromptu shower through the sun roof at a car wash!), but when they are, expect hours of pure joy behind the wheel. And it’s got quite the advanced system that allows you to take on any obstacle.
