Automakers may be having trouble getting new models into the hands of buyers, but the quality of what they’re making is higher than ever

2022 Green Vehicle of the Year (eligible for government rebates): Hyundai Ioniq 5

With electrification transforming the industry, the categories are bound to change rapidly over the next few years. For now, we're sticking with our method of splitting EVs into two groups: models that qualify for both federal and provincial government discounts or just the federal rebate, and models that qualify for neither.

Among those that qualify for both, there is obviously now more choice then ever, but two new ones stand out: the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6. We're talking about close cousins, in fact, so the vote could have gone either way, especially if the two models had shown up at the same time (the EV6 is debuting now, a little later than the Ioniq 5).

In third place behind that all-new tandem is a “veteran” of the format, another Kia product. The Niro EV continues to impress despite it being slightly older than the newest generation of EVs. That says a lot about what it has to offer owners.

2022 Green Vehicle of the Year (not eligible for government rebates): Audi e-tron GT

As for the models that are not eligible (or that only qualify only at the provincial level in some jurisdictions), the choice is vast and obviously includes some very high-end products. The first two steps of the podium are occupied by auto-group cousins, but it is the Audi e-tron GT that took top spot against the Porsche Taycan.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E, which is proving very popular with the public, also did well.

What about Tesla's proposals? The Auto123 team has no bias for or against them, but like in the odd other case across the industry, they are impossible to get hold of to actually drive. It's very difficult for a vehicle to stand out come award time if it hasn't been test-driven. Enough said.
