NASCAR spokesman, Kerry Tharp, tweeted “#NASCAR will issue no penalties from last weekend’s events at @ACSupdates.”
Thus the sanctioning body concluded that the last lap wreck involving Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin was just a racing incident, dueling for the victory.
Despite some post-race comments that could have been considered inappropriate by Joey Logano that Hamlin had it coming, that statement was taken in the proper context of the hard racing for the win. Upon learning of Hamlin back injury Logano went to great lengths to say that he did not wish any personal harm to Hamlin. Hamlin was released from Loma Linda University Medical Center on Monday evening and flew home in Charlotte, NC where he’ll be further evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates to determine whether surgery is required. Dr. Petty is well known to the racing community. It is unknown when he will be able to return to racing. The other incident, which might have produced a penalty, occurred when Tony Stewart went after Logano in the garage after the race. Stewart angrily said that Logano had blocked him, taking him to the lowest part of the track (and almost off-the-track). Crew members and NASCAR officials had to separate the two drivers. In a post-race interview the three-time Sprint Cup Champion promised revenge for the blocking him. Ironically, in the past, Stewart admitted causing a 25-car wreck in the closing laps at Talladega for doing the same thing.
