Nelson Piquet Jr's weekend came to a disappointing end when he was disqualified from this morning's GP2 series race.
source: gp2series.com An error from the Hitech Piquet Sports Team has seen Nelson Piquet Jr disqualified from Race 2 at Magny-Cours. Following a tough first race on Saturday, Piquet believed he had done enough in Race 2 to be assured two points for setting the fastest lap. The stewards, however, had a different opinion, and excluded the Brazilian from the results for contravening Article 34.5 of the Sporting Regulations. Article 34.5 states that... "Unless a precautionary tyre change is necessary for clear and genuine safety reasons, only a punctured or damaged tyre may be changed during the (second) race." Hitech Piquet Sports, however, changed all four of Nelson's tyres on two separate occasions, thus braking the rules. "For the second race we decided to get the fastest lap," explained Nelson after the race, "but we had a few problems with the clutch in the beginning and then they disqualified us, so I didn't even get the two points for the fastest lap, because they said we can't change tyres. "When I stopped early in the race I had a vibration, and I thought it was the clutch or the gearbox, but they said 'maybe it's the tyres - put these tyres on,' so we did, because the race was fucked anyway. So I put on the tyres and actually it seemed okay, and I could run, run, run, but I locked up because they were the tyres from the last race and were pretty old. It was getting slippery and we were losing time so I said 'let's put the other tyres on,' so we put them back on and it was okay, and then it was the end of the race and they disqualified me. I came back the second time because the tyres were finished - completely finished. I put the tyres that I started with back on, and they disqualified me!"
